Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is an undergraduate degree program in India that focuses on the traditional system of medicine known as Ayurveda. Ayurveda, one of the oldest holistic healing systems in the world, originated in ancient India and has been practiced for thousands of years. BAMS is a comprehensive course that combines the study of traditional Ayurvedic principles with modern medical science.
The BAMS curriculum covers a wide range of subjects including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, toxicology, surgery, and gynecology, among others. However, what sets BAMS apart from other medical degrees is its emphasis on Ayurvedic principles such as the balance of bodily doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), the use of herbal remedies, dietary and lifestyle modifications, and therapies like Panchakarma.
ndian students aspiring to pursue BAMS typically undergo a rigorous selection process, which often involves competitive entrance examinations conducted by various universities and institutions across the country. Once admitted, students undergo a five and a half year long program, which includes a one-year internship in a hospital or clinical setting.
Upon completion of the BAMS degree, graduates are eligible to practice as Ayurvedic doctors or physicians. They can diagnose illnesses, prescribe herbal remedies, perform Ayurvedic treatments, and provide holistic healthcare to patients. Additionally, BAMS graduates can also pursue further specialization through postgraduate courses in Ayurveda or related fields.
BAMS offers Indian students a unique opportunity to delve into the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda while also acquiring modern medical knowledge and skills. It not only equips them with the tools to address contemporary health issues but also fosters a deep understanding of holistic healthcare practices rooted in India’s rich cultural heritage.
